The term of stolen Generation, was when aboriginal children were taken away from the families in the 1890’s & 1970’s. Children as young as babies were stolen and placed in boy and girl missionary’s, scared for life by their experiences, at the age of 18 the children were released into the white society. So practically those children never got see their parents or siblings, from the moment they got taken. They were considered to be low class inferior people.
The stolen generation is know as one of the darkest chapters of Australians History. The stolen generation is under a term known as “injustice” because they didn’t really have a choice in the matter, it also shows a lack of unfairness towards the indigenous society and its also an unjust act.
The stolen generation started happening because they were usually not fully aboriginal and they wanted to make them grow up in a society of whites, the white people didn’t want aboriginal culture growing, if anything, they were hoping to increase the amount of the numbers of the indigenous.
Where did the children go after been taken away from their families? They would be with foster parents or raised on missions. They totally got parted from their aboriginality, if any aboriginal language was involve, they would severely be punished and face that consequence.in the removal the government, churches and welfares were in charge to remove especially the half-cast children, and they thought they were doing the right thing. The girls usually trained to be domestic servants, farm hands and laborers and the boys would have to be stockmen or laborers.
They were not allowed to speak their language or practice in any rituals. Many of them felt worthless and they suffered with depression and many commited suicide. Many of the children lost their own language and culture, when some of the children got to finally meet their parents it was almost impossible to communicate and there was a huge cultural gap.
The Threat of taking children was deliberately used by the board to control the behavior of Aboriginal parents and other adults. As Bruno Bettelheim pointed out in his analysis of Nazi tactics during the holocaust, terror is one of the most effective means of controlling an entire group and it relies upon making an example of only a few people, the board deliberately threatened child removal because it was aware of how deeply they value their children.
Human rights were breached and if ignored againts aboriginal people. one of the worst crimes that has affected Austrlian Hisotry. It caused discracful events that nobody could ever forget and especially the families who were affected by this.
What were the circumstances that result in this campaign/events? Well the campaign: (ANT) launches the Sorry Books campaign where Australians can sign to the federal government’s refusal to make a formal apology to the Stolen Generations. They had to apologize for everything they ever done to the aboriginals culture and taking everything from them. By the 1911 Northern Territory, along with all states; besides Tasmania had given the Board of Protection control over Indigenous people. The Board was also made the legal guardian of all Indigenous children in Australia and Enforcing this legislation was left to ‘protectors’, who were usually police officers. Those children who were taken from their families would become known as the ‘Stolen generation.
The events of the stolen generation:
1883- The NSW Aborigines Protection Board is established to manage the lives of 9,000 people. That the indigenous children, I’m pretty sure.
